New to Emperor: Battle for Dune is the subhouse system, which has every player choose up to two of five subhouses (Fremen, The Guild, Ix, Sardaukar, and Tleilaxu), each giving a unique building and two units to be used alongside the core house arsenals. The three houses seen previously (Atreides, Ordos, and Harkonnen) are back, and are now both functionally and stylistically more distinct. Although it was done in a proprietary engine by Intelligent Games, it was the first Westwood-branded real-time strategy in 3D for the PC. The development was once again done by Intelligent Games. Instead of being a remake, it follows on from the Ordos victory in both of the two previous games.
